Stourport-on-Severn Fact File
Stourport-on-Severn came into being as a result of the implementation of the canal network. Prior to the growth of the town there existed a small hamlet called Lower Mitton. The town grew up around the canal basins and the locks between the canal and the river. The canal to Stourport was opened in 1771 and five canal basins had been completed by 1812. Stourport became the busiest inland port in the Midlands after Birmingham.
